Orthognathic Surgery Surgical Orthodontics

Orthognathic surgery is a type of orthodontic treatment that allows for the correction of severe orthodontic issues, including bad bites, jawbone abnormalities, and the incorrect positioning of the teeth when the jaws are closed (malocclusion). Recognized as one of the nine dental specialties, the surgical procedures necessary to correct the problems are used in about 5% of the general population. The techniques have been improved and refined through the years, with modern treatment being high value with low risk.

Exceptions Requiring Surgical Orthodontics

The first exception to the rule scenario is that of a cleft palate or cleft lip. Surgical orthodontics can correct this birth defect, and it is well established. Other dental deformities that are too severe for regular orthodontic treatment is that of gross jaw discrepancies. This simply means that the jaws don’t align, creating an overbite or underbite. There can also be discrepancies in the facial structure that would result in problems associated with sleep apnea, airway defects, and soft tissue problems. This surgery has a 90 to 100% success rate when it comes to treating obstructive sleep apnea.

Cleft lip and cleft palate surgery is usually done when the child is an infant to allow all the soft tissue to grow properly from that point on. With regards to orthognathic surgery on the jaw, it usually needs to wait until the jaws are done growing. This is usually about the age of 16 for females and 18 for males. The jaws need to be finished growing.

The Benefits of Surgical Orthodontics

Making a decision like going through an orthognathic surgical procedure isn’t something you do every day. Dr. Pan has the technology and ability to show you your facial appearance after the correction. Take your time and consider the process from start to finish. Once you are finished with the jaw correction and the orthodontic treatment to fine-tune your teeth, look in the mirror, give yourself a huge grin, and enjoy it.

Cleft lip and cleft palate corrections are total game changers. This deformity has physical and psychological ramifications. Going through surgery to correct a jaw or another deformity to eliminate sleep apnea from your life moving forward is huge. To get a good night’s sleep and to be able to function properly throughout the day without feeling sleep-deprived is difficult to put a dollar sign to.

Finally, there is your smile. A personal asset that only you own, having surgical orthodontics to fix your jaw alignment and inevitably improve your smile, is another attribute that you just can’t put a value on. Your smile is directly related to your self-esteem and your self-confidence. That beautiful and healthy smile will carry you through your personal life and into your business circles.

The average life expectancy today is 81 years for women and 76 years for men. If you have this procedure at the age of 16 or 18, you have three-quarters of your life to live ahead of you.

Once you see that new smile in the mirror, please adhere to the advice from the health industry. It’s a small thing to ask of you to brush your teeth twice a day for at least two minutes and then floss between your teeth at least once a day. Seeing your dentist twice a year for regular evaluations and professional cleaning is such a simple thing to ask to protect an asset that is difficult to put a value on.

Orthognathic Surgery Process Expectations

Planning plays a very big role in orthognathic surgical orthodontics. Depending on the type of surgery, it could involve a multidisciplinary team that includes a surgeon, an orthodontist, and a speech and language therapist. There may also be a psychologist involved to deal with the changes in the patient's face.

X-rays begin the process, as well as possibly some 3D digital scanning. The software associated with this scan will allow the orthodontist and the patient to see what the surgically altered face will look like. The changes are ever so slight, but there will be no surprises. The objective, after all, is to correct the alignment and therefore have an aesthetic face and even an enlarged airway.

It is generally a three-step procedure. First, Dr. Pan will start aligning all the teeth with orthodontic braces. This process will take 6-12 months, so the individual upper and lower arches are in good positions regardless of how they bite together. On the day of surgery, which is step two, the surgical procedure is done under general anesthesia in a hospital. The operation is conducted through the interior of the mouth, so no skin is cut. The jaw bones are cut, repositioned, and wired or screwed into their new position.

Depending on each and every patient, the procedure might take several hours. It is considered a major treatment, so you will need two weeks of healing away from the office or school. You may be asked to adhere to an all-liquid diet, and you will have both swelling and bruising around the jaw corrected. You will also be prescribed a pain medication.

The last step is the post-surgical phase of braces, where Dr. Pan will now focus on bringing the new bite together. This process generally takes about 6 months of time. In our office, we use Suresmile technology for surgical patients. Suresmile helps us see the bone, the teeth, the roots, and braces before and after surgery through a process of digital diagnosis, planning, and robotic arch wire bending. This ensures the most efficiency and comfort for our surgical patients and significantly reduces treatment time.

Retainer wear for surgical patients is no different than other patients. Guard your new smile with retainers that Dr. Pan gives you. We believe in doing it once and doing it right!
