Palatal Expansion through Expander Device Use

It is extremely important to take your child to see a dentist at a young age. The dentist can then establish an initial foundation, a starting point, or a baseline as your youngster continues to grow. As the permanent teeth start to erupt, the dentist may begin to identify an issue related to space. With the teeth that have erupted it can be determined that the jaw line and the alignment is going to end up with a crowding issue. This is when the palatal expansion needs to be introduced.

The entire staff at Pan Orthodontics, at 7830 Main St. in Maple Grove, MN, is trained to identify and evaluate palatal expansion issues. With an evaluation we may find out there is indeed insufficient space. Call 952-926-3747 for a consultation today. We will explain other possible indications in your youngster’s mouth that may warrant the palatal expansion, how the device works, and the benefits and end results of going through the process.

Indicators that Suggest the Need for Palatal Expansion

There are three primary reasons in which to consider the palatal expansion process. The first reason identified is that of a cross bite. A cross bite is when the child’s upper jaw to too narrow to line up with the lower jaw. The upper back teeth bite inside of the lower back teeth. An easy correction is with the palatal expander.

The second reason we mentioned earlier is that of crowding. If there is not going to be enough room for the teeth to erupt, they will come in crooked and the final alignment will be off. They also could remain impacted and not erupt because of the lack of space. Another easy correction with the expansion of the upper jaw. Palatal expansion is the solution by creating the space to encourage the impacted tooth to erupt.

Other uncommon situations are those of airway obstruction, respiratory and sinus ailments, and serious malocclusion, which is how the upper and lower teeth match up as the jaws close. Palatal expansion can also be beneficial if your child was born with either a cleft palate or a cleft lip. The palatal expansion can be part of the process to correct the conditions that contribute to this development.

Palatal Expansion Process

Palatal Expansion is not part of the current digital technology that has impacted the dental industry. In fact, the first palatal expansion was documented in 1859. Advancements in the methodology have been made since then and the actual expanding device in use today was introduced into the US in 1956.

The results and the duration of the expansion process is much easier to control if the patient is younger. The upper jaw starts its development as two separate halves that will not fuse together until sometime after puberty. Therefore Dr. Pan is moving the two halves that are not resisting each other. Much quicker, easier, and safer. Palatal expansion can be done in adult as well, but successful results will take both palatal surgery in combination with orthodontic braces to achieve the desired results. It is in adults for the same reasons, I.e., crowding, crossbite and airway. A youngster wearing an expander is looking at six to nine months.

Final Results and Benefits of having the Palatal Expansion Process

During this expansion process, your youngster may find it slightly challenging to speak and eat normally because of the placement of the expander. They will feel the pressure every time the screw or key is turned as well.

Often after a successful palatal expansion you will see a gap between the two front teeth. We will determine if the gap will close naturally or if any additional orthodontic procedures might be necessary to complete the revamping of the jaw alignment and the introduction of a brand-new smile.

Even though the process sounds a bit unnerving it is perfectly safe, a common procedure and it has many benefits. The cross bite will be corrected, the impacted tooth will erupt to save a natural tooth, and the bite pattern will be normal. You will take a huge step in the positive development of your child. Not enough is ever said about the value of our smile and the impact of that smile on our self-esteem and our self-confidence. This is particularly important in the development of a child. With the perception of a nice smile your child will carry and present himself or herself ever so differently.

This also a perfect time to begin good oral hygiene habits for your youngster. We will encourage them to brush their teeth at least twice a day and to do it well. Not to rush like children so often do. We will also show them how to floss their teeth and the benefits of why flossing is important. Palatal expansion is an important first step in heading in the right direction in correcting their life-long smile.

A palatal expander will look just like a retainer that has been cut in half. Anchored to the back teeth, the teeth that Dr. Pan wants to push out ever so slightly, the two halves are connected in the middle with a simple screw. The device is attached to the teeth and then a key is simply used to turn the screw to create the tension to apply the force and pressure necessary to move the back teeth out to the desired position in the jaw.

See how much easier this is when the patient is at a younger age? The growth of the patient is advantageous in accelerating the palatal expansion. Rapid movement might have the patient turning the screw, or key, once a day, and repeating that daily process until the desired expansion has been achieved. Slower expansion can take those advancements to a weekly movement. A lot of this is relative to the level of discomfort the youngster is being subjected to and how much they can tolerate.

When the expansion is finished the expander will need to remain in place for another six months to allow the bones to grow together and not allow the teeth to return to their previous positions.
