Palatal Expansion Alternatives

Many people are familiar with traditional braces, however, there are numerous types of orthodontic appliances used to improve function and treat dental issues. A palate expander an orthodontic device used during the initial phase of orthodontic treatment for children.

What is a Palate Expander?

A palate expander is an orthodontic device which is commonly used to widen the upper jaw. This treatment is usually recommended for patients under the age of 16. The treatment is recommended for children because the palate or the roof of the mouth is still flexible as it is not fully fused together. Palate expanders are typically used to treat a crossbite or create additional space for adult teeth. They are often used before traditional braces.

How Do Palate Expanders Work?

The palate expander is an orthodontic appliance which is cemented to the molar teeth. The expander includes two side pieces that are connected in the middle. The device is not removable and typically remains in place for six to nine months. Palate expanders work using a special key to turn the middle screw. Someone other than the patient typically turns the key to ensure it is done correctly. When the screw is turned, pressure is applied which pushes the palatal bones apart to the desired location. Once the expander achieves the desired expansion, the device typically remains in place to allow the palate to stabilize and bone to form in the gap.

What to Expect from a Palate Expander?

The palate expander may feel awkward in the beginning. It can especially cause discomfort when patients are eating and talking. There may be some drooling or patients may have a lisp while they become comfortable with the appliance and make adjustments. Patients usually experience minimal pain. Some patients experience a pressure below the eyes or at the top of the nose, which is common after turning the key. As the palate slowly expands, gaps may develop between the teeth. These gaps will eventually be corrected with braces.

Care for a Palate Expander

It is important to be diligent in caring for your teeth and gums. Good oral hygiene will help prevent tooth decay and swollen gums which can grow over the bands. The expander itself should be relatively easy to care for, but may take additional time to clean because of where it is located.

Palate expanders should be cleaned multiple times a day, and following every meal. A mouth rinse or syringe can be helpful to thoroughly remove food or other debris. Patients should avoid food that can damage the expander such as nuts, sticky foods and popcorn. It is also important not to chew on ice or hard objects which can also damage the expander.

Palate Expander Alternatives

Palate expanders are typically used for young patients before the palate bones are fused together. However, there are alternative options for adults. In some cases, teeth may be extracted in order to create more room in the mouth.

In cases where minimal movement is needed, a removable expander can be an effective option to achieve the desired outcome for adults. Removable expanders are not recommended for younger patients as they can struggle with compliance. Another option is the combination of surgical intervention and traditional braces. When this treatment option is used, the upper jaw is intentionally broken into smaller sections in order to create movable parts. The jaw can then be adjusted and a custom appliance can be used along with braces.
