How Does Invisalign Work?

Many people desire straighter teeth, however, they don’t want the unsightly and uncomfortable metal brackets that come with traditional braces. For many patients, Invisalign can be an ideal solution to alleviate these concerns.

Invisalign aligners are nearly invisible, do not contain metal and are customized to fit your teeth. The aligners use a series of trays which slowly adjust your teeth into the desired place. You will receive a new tray about every two weeks which will progressively adjust your teeth into their ideal positions. Because Invisalign aligners are clear and barely noticeable, they are perfect for adults and teens who want a more discreet option for straightening their teeth.

What to Expect During the Treatment Process

In order to get started, schedule a consultation with an Invisalign-trained dentist or orthodontist. They can help determine if Invisalign is a valid option for you. The dentist can also help discuss possible outcomes, treatment duration and provide a cost estimate for treatment.

Following your consultation, the dentist will take a digital scan including 3-D imaging. This is used to create a customized treatment plan. Next the images are used to create your custom aligners. The smooth, BPA-free plastic used to manufacture the trays is comfortable enough for constant wear.

The aligners progressively straighten your teeth through the use of a patented thermoplastic design. Invisalign controls the force used to straighten teeth in addition to the timing of the force applied. This helps ensure the pain is manageable.

Invisalign Treatment Timeline

The average treatment time for adults is about 12 months. The timeline varies based on the severity of the case and what all is required during the treatment. Your doctor will work with you to set clear expectations as they create your individualized treatment plan.

Your Invisalign provider may also use attachments along with the treatment. When necessary, tooth-colored composite “bumps” are placed on the tooth to help the aligner grip the teeth better. This helps ensure efficiency and optimal tooth adjustment.

Invisalign Can Fix a Wide Variety of Dental Problems

A few problems which Invisalign can help correct include teeth gaps, overbites, underbites and crowded teeth. In addition to the aesthetic appearance, these problems can affect your overall dental health. Gapped teeth leave the gums unprotected and can cause or worsen periodontal disease. Overbites and underbites can cause stress in the jaw which sometimes lead to painful joint problems. Overly crowded teeth often lead to an increased accumulation of plaque. Because it is difficult to effectively brush and floss in these areas, it can often lead to cavities. Invisalign works to address all of these issues and help promote optimal oral health.

Invisalign Doesn’t Interfere with Daily Life

Invisalign aligners are designed to be worn daily and to not interfere with your regular routine. You should take them out in the morning and evening for a thorough cleaning. Simply brush the aligners when you brush your teeth. They should also be removed when you are ready to eat. Fortunately, this means you can enjoy all your favorite foods without modification or restrictions. Because you can brush your teeth as normal, you aren’t jeopardizing the cleanliness of your teeth. Invisalign is also ideal for people who play contact sports and are required to wear mouthguards. The aligners simply need to be removed while playing your sport of choice and replaced whenever you are finished.
